A Spectacle Blind Flange consists of a solid disc and an open ring joined by a connecting web. The open section allows pipeline flow, while the solid section provides complete isolation. Overview
How Spectacle Blind Flanges Work

OPEN POSITION
The open ring, or spacer side, is positioned between the two mating flanges during normal operation. Its bore aligns with the pipeline, allowing process fluid or gas to pass through the line with minimal obstruction.

LOOSEN & ROTATE
When positive isolation is required, the system is depressurized and the flange bolts are loosened according to the approved procedure. The spectacle blind is then rotated so the solid blind disc moves into the pipeline bore.

CLOSED POSITION
The solid blind section is positioned between the mating flanges and the joint is properly reassembled and tightened. This creates a physical barrier that blocks flow and provides positive line isolation for maintenance, inspection, or shutdown.

VISIBLE ISOLATION
Because the blind and spacer are permanently connected in a figure-8 shape, the exposed side provides a clear visual indication of the line configuration. Operators can readily verify whether the pipeline is configured for flow or positive isolation.
